Web site matches people to churches

Stephani and Chad Olson are in the matchmaking game, but not in the way you may think.

Instead of helping singles find their soul mates, the Glendale couple help people find a church they're compatible with.

The Olsons recently launched www.churchshoppers.com, a Web site that features more than 103,000 Christian churches across the United States. People can use the site for free and search for churches by name, location or denomination.

Stephani Olson describes the Web site as a for-profit business with a ministry edge.

She said the goal is twofold: to make it easier for people to locate a home church that meets their needs and to help churches market themselves and attract more members.

"We know the struggles of finding a home church, whether you're relocating or you're getting a fresh start," Olson said. "We know that's hard. People look in the Yellow Book and do drive-bys. It takes a lot of time."

A handful of churches in Arizona, North Carolina and Pennsylvania have created detailed profiles that provide such information as service times and video clips. The thousands of other listings in the directory were provided through mailing lists the Olsons purchased in order to create a comprehensive database.

Stephani said it hasn't been easy getting started. Some churches the couple contacted questioned the site's intent.

"Marketing is a new idea for churches," she said. "It's a trust issue, too. . . . We know we have to build relationships."

Online advertising is a new concept for Mountain Park Community Church in Phoenix.

David Swisher, the church's administrator, said it hasn't done much marketing on the Internet other than a Web site. It usually sent out mailers and placed newspaper advertisements. Church officials decided to test out the Olsons' site for one year.

"It sounded like a good idea to match people up to different churches so they get a better idea of what a church is like before they visited," Swisher said.

In order to encourage more churches to sign up, the Olsons are allowing churches to set up a profile and receive an annual membership for free.

Normally, the annual cost is $69.97 for a standard profile and $99.97 for a premium profile. Churches will need to pay the membership fee a year from now if they want to continue being featured on the site.

They can build their profiles online or over the telephone.

Future plans include adding an Internet mapping function and an online Christian resource center that features Christian businesses, performers and an employment database.

The Olsons' involvement in church inspired them to start the site. Stephani said she had taught at a Christian high school and worked in youth ministry. They had always thought about starting a home-based business, and since they had experience working with churches, that is the concept they pursued.

The online dating site eHarmony.com gave them the idea of a directory on the Internet.

They invested $20,000 to launch the Web site and hired a Webmaster. Olson said www.churchshoppers.com averages more than 20 searches per day.
